When it comes to eloping in Queenstown, you’re spoiled for choice. Whether you’re after quiet lakeside romance, dramatic alpine views, or something a little whimsical, this region offers some of the most breathtaking spots in New Zealand—and the world. Here’s a guide to some of my favourite elopement locations, perfect for couples who want something intimate, meaningful, and full of natural beauty.

Moke Lake

Tucked just 20 minutes from Queenstown, Moke Lake is calm, reflective, and surrounded by golden hills and peaks. It’s a local favourite for its peaceful atmosphere and mirror-like water on still days. It’s especially stunning at sunrise or sunset, and often secluded enough to feel like it’s yours alone.

Coronet Peak

Accessible year-round, Coronet Peak is one of the best alpine locations with minimal hiking required. In winter, you’ll find snow-dusted mountains and crisp air; in summer, the golden tussocks and sweeping views provide a dreamy backdrop. It’s a great choice if you want those high-country feels without needing a helicopter.

Jacks Point

Queenstown Beach

Right in the heart of town, Queenstown Beach offers a laid-back, effortlessly beautiful setting for elopements and photo sessions. With Lake Whakatipu stretching out in front of you and the Remarkables towering in the background, it’s hard to believe a location this stunning is so accessible. It’s perfect for couples who want those iconic Queenstown views with a relaxed, intimate vibe—ideal for sunset portraits or a spontaneous “just us” ceremony before heading off for a celebratory drink nearby.

Remarkables Lookout

For a more elevated feel, the Remarkables Lookout has jaw-dropping views across Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu. The rugged landscape adds drama and texture, and on a clear day, it’s hard to beat. It’s ideal for couples looking for an adventurous touch without straying too far from town.

Lake Hayes

Skippers Canyon

Cecil Peak (Heli-Only)

Ok, so this one isn’t free as you’ll need to book a heli to get there – but it’s worth every cent! For couples wanting a truly unforgettable experience, Cecil Peak is an incredible helicopter-accessed location, it’s also the most affordable of all the Queenstown Heli locations. It offers panoramic views of Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding mountain ranges—remote, cinematic, and absolutely breathtaking. It’s private, peaceful, and feels like the top of the world.

Timing is everything: Golden hour light makes a huge difference, especially in alpine settings.

Consider the seasons: Queenstown changes dramatically with the weather—snowy peaks in winter, golden tussocks in summer, rich colours in autumn.

Permits & privacy: Some locations, like Moke Lake or Thurlby Domain, may require permits or booking in advance—worth checking before you set your heart on a spot.
