Some proposals are all about the grand gesture. Others are about creating a moment that feels beautifully personal.

When Anthony first got in touch, he had a clear vision. He wanted the proposal to feel timeless and understated, inspired by an “old money” aesthetic with soft florals, candlelight and a setting that spoke for itself rather than needing anything over the top. My job was to help bring that vision to life.

Why we chose Jacks Retreat

One of the first things we talked about was location.

There are plenty of beautiful places to propose in Queenstown, but privacy was just as important as the scenery. Anthony wanted a moment that felt completely their own, without tourists wandering past or having to wait for the perfect opportunity.

Jacks Retreat is one of my favourite places for exactly that reason.

Set high above Jacks Point with uninterrupted views across Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables, it offers an incredible sense of space and calm. It feels secluded without being difficult to access, making it ideal for couples wanting something intimate while still surrounded by some of Queenstown’s most spectacular scenery.

Bringing the vision together

To create the atmosphere Anthony had imagined, I enlisted the help of Katerina from Picnique.

Together, we created a proposal setting that felt elegant and effortless.

Soft white florals, carefully placed candles and thoughtful styling transformed the space without taking away from the landscape. Every detail was chosen to complement the surroundings rather than compete with them.

It was romantic, refined and exactly the kind of setting Anthony had described from the very beginning.

One of my favourite parts of planning proposals is helping couples create something that reflects who they are. No two proposals need to look the same, and even the smallest details can make the experience feel incredibly personal.

The perfect surprise

As they walked towards the setup, Marianna had no idea what was waiting for her.

Anthony had done an amazing job of keeping the secret, despite all the planning that had happened behind the scenes over the previous weeks.

When he got down on one knee, everything else seemed to disappear.

Just the two of them, surrounded by mountains, lake views and a setting that felt like it had been created just for them.

Those quiet, genuine moments are always my favourite to photograph.

More than just photographs

One of the things I love most about planning surprise proposals is that couples don’t have to figure it all out on their own.

From recommending locations and arranging trusted local vendors to helping with timing and keeping everything running smoothly on the day, there’s a lot happening behind the scenes so that, when the moment arrives, all you need to do is enjoy it.

Even if plans need to change because of weather or timing, having a local team means there’s always another beautiful option.
