When Alyx got in touch about planning a surprise proposal for her partner Dani, we knew it was going to be something special. She had teamed up with the amazing team at My Secret Picnic to create the most beautiful autumn-themed lakeside setup at Jacks Point, one of my favourite proposal locations in Queenstown.

The styling was full of warmth and personality – autumn tones, disco balls for a little extra sparkle, soft cushions, fresh flowers, and the most delicious picnic spread complete with organic teas, cake, and a grazing box to share.

But what Alyx didn’t know was that Dani had her own surprise tucked away – and what started as a romantic Queenstown proposal picnic turned into a joyful double proposal, with both of them dropping to one knee for each other.

It was pure magic to photograph. From the moment I arrived and saw the scene unfold from a distance, I could feel the emotion bubbling just below the surface. I stayed hidden while Alyx proposed, quietly capturing the moment before joining them for some photos along the lakeshore.

As a Queenstown engagement photographer, it’s moments like these that remind me how lucky I am to do this work. The connection between Alyx and Dani was so caring and joyful – they kept brushing each other’s hair back between photos, holding hands tightly, and beaming every time they looked at the rings they’d chosen for one another. (Seriously, they couldn’t take their eyes off them – and I don’t blame them.)

We stayed at Jacks Point to soak in the golden afternoon light, making the most of the stunning views. The Remarkables mountain range, with snow still clinging to the tops, made the perfect backdrop. The autumn tones in the landscape tied in beautifully with the styling, and with the rich colours Alyx and Dani had chosen to wear. Everything just worked.
